Tylosin - Antibiotic for Honeybees
May 2009 -- Tylosin is an important antibiotic with relatively low toxicity. It belongs
to a class of antibacterials known as macrolides. American foulbrood (AFB) is a
disease of honey bees caused by a spore-forming bacteria, and is considered to be
one of the most widespread and lethal diseases affecting honey bees in the
world. Oxytetracycline has been the only antibiotic approved for use on honey
bees in the USA, however, due to the emergence of resistant strains of AFB
bacteria it is becoming less effective. Tylosin has been found to be effective
against AFB and was approved by USDA for use in bee hives in October 2005. As of
this date, no tolerance has been established by the USA for Tylosin in honey because residue levels of
toxicological significance are not anticipated.
