Sudan Red I, II, III & IV
August 2007 -- Sudan red dye, primarily Red I, has been
found in some chili products at levels as high as 4000 ppm. The Sudan colors are synthetic azo dyes suspected of
being carcinogens and are not approved for use in food. The European Union has
established an action level of 0.5 ppm for illegal dyes in food. Sudan I levels
below approximately 100-200 ppm do not impart significant color enhancement to
foods, therefore, in cases of color adulteration higher levels would be
expected.
Detectable levels below this are probably due to cross-contamination during
processing from red colored lubricants used on processing equipment, inks, red
colored bags, analytical false positives, or, blending of adulterated with clean
commodities. We are able to test for
the four red Sudan dyes using the EU recommended method. Analysis is by HPLC-MS.
